How to prepare a parcel for China
A practical checklist to avoid delays, returns and unexpected charges.

Packing
- Use a sturdy box just large enough for the contents — empty space can increase the volumetric weight you pay for.
- Some lines require original packaging or limit the number of items per category; ask before packing.
Declaring contents
- List each item with a plain description, quantity and value. Customs may inspect parcels and reassess the value.
- Keep the total for a mailed shipment within China's ¥2,000 personal-items limit unless it is a single indivisible item (see the customs guide).
The recipient's address and ID
- Write the address in Chinese with province, city, district, street and a mobile phone number — Chinese delivery companies contact the recipient by phone.
- Some lines require the recipient's Chinese ID number, and sometimes an ID photo upload, for customs clearance; others (for example some postal-clearance lines) do not. Your provider will tell you.
Items to check first
- Batteries and devices with built-in batteries — taxed at 50% and refused by many lines.
- Alcohol, tobacco, perfume, aerosols and other liquids.
- Meat products, fresh food, seeds and plants.
- Medicines — usually limited to reasonable personal quantities.
- Luxury goods — often excluded from duty-inclusive lines.
After you ship
Keep your receipt and tracking number. If Chinese customs contacts the recipient, respond promptly — parcels can be returned if clearance is not completed, and returns can take months.
